Steam Boiler Preservation Solutions

A New Look

BoilerSaver supplies USA-made chemical treatments and lubricants for antique steam locomotives, model live steam engines, steam tractors, and heritage railroads. Their previous site was outdated, hard to navigate on mobile, and invisible in search results for terms like “steam boiler treatment” or “model locomotive maintenance.” Product discovery was buried, forms were clunky, and the legacy logo no longer reflected their technical precision or trusted reputation among 10,000+ steam enthusiasts worldwide.

The Logo

The original BoilerSaver logo was a low-resolution bitmap of a vintage steam boiler wrapped in a life preserver. It was iconic but blurry on screens and impossible to scale for shirts, signs, or business cards.

I rebuilt it from scratch in Adobe Illustrator as a clean, scalable vector while keeping the client’s must-have element: the life preserver.

  • Redrew the boiler with precise lines and subtle shading for depth
  • Strengthened the life preserver with crisp curves and consistent thickness
  • Replaced the old font with a bold, modern serif that reads clearly at any size
  • Created variants: full color, monochrome, inverted, and one-color for embroidery/print

Result: A professional, versatile logo that honors heritage and scales perfectly from favicon to vehicle wrap. Ready for digital, apparel, signage, and packaging.

The Show Must Go On

While working on the Boat show with the rest of the team, the task of making it work in the middle of the pandemic fell on everyone’s shoulders. I found myself in multiple roles during the production, from helping with website design, spearheading the game branding/elements, email marketing, and creating motion graphics for behind-the-scenes action before the show.

Process

The Treasure Chest Giveaway

Every year Highway Marine hosts a treasure chest giveaway where show attendees can try their luck at winning various prizes. In 2021 the game was moved online for the first time due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and we had to make it just as exciting. I was tasked with making most of the game elements. In the effort of timeliness, elements were combinations of stock illustration and custom designs to create a professional and fun game for the show. The client and team we’re extremely impressed with what I was able to create.

Working with the team at DAY Vision Marketing on this project was a great challenge from start to finish, but all our efforts paid off and the show went off without a hitch from the live stream to the in-person coordination, to the film crew to the game, and much more.

Project Overview

Discovering New Methods

When I took on this project is was just a simple illustration project, though when I had the idea to vectorize the design, I discovered a whole new method of illustrating via colored geometry. While mosaics are nothing new themselves, this was the first time I’d personally discovered it’s beauty in a digital environment. The result of geometrizing elevated its final look.

A Comic With No Words

Axios is a comic about self-growth expressed using not a single word. Silent comics are a bit of an underground community but nothing new. Sometimes a story can be more impactful when the reader has to see the story instead of it being fed to them via dialogue.

Process

Concept Art and an Idea

During development, I had to find efficient ways to plan poses and made the skeleton shown above, which allowed me to rapidly pose out the characters for each frame.

From the beginning, planning was paramount to the story being understood. Every single frame of the comic was written numbered and planned to fit into each page. Everything fits into its designed place.

Conclusion

Axios was a fun journey to take as an artist. Before I began, I thought making a story without any words would be near impossible, but once, you discover how expressive just the shape of a line can be, it becomes clear any story can be told silently.
